PROJECT 2 - THE EXPERIMENTAL SOUL

SITE VISIT

KUALA SEPETANG | IN-BETWEEN | TAIPING

Project 2 started with the site visit in Kuala Sepetang and Taiping. We have explored these two places and the in-between and understood the essential life of the environment before carrying out all the tasks. We have learnt how to be sensitive to human experience through time, place, space and texture throughout the entire excursion.

TASK 01a

In Task 01A, we were required to express our observation of the places we have visited in 5 black & white photograph postcards of each place which best represent the movement, smell, sound, patterns, texture, warmth or cold, light and shadow and also mood of the place.

TASK 01b&c

Later, we have to come out with a scale conceptual site model which consists of the essence that we have gotten throughout the excursion from Taiping to Kuala Sepetang.

We have decided and chosen GROWTH as the main core idea. The growth of the nature is what ties these two places together. It acts as a connection to connect the fishing village and the developing town together.

We have use a few different materials for the conceptual site model such as copper wires, wires, nails and torn silk.

Copper wires

to represent the nature that coexists in both Kuala Sepetang and Taiping

Wires and nails

to resembles the strength, whch were arranged in grid organization to represent the order of Taiping.

Torn silk

to signify the old fishing village which is Kuala Sepetang

TASK 02

In this task 2 which is an individual work, we were asked to use the essence that we have captured during site visit and the previous task and apply it into designing an experimental installation. It must have a seating element in it however it is not a chair.

In previous task, GROWTH is the main idea of all and in this stage I have applied it into my design. Basically, Kuala Sepetang and Taiping shows a very obvious transition from chaotic to organized. It is a growth from chaos into order. The installation is named as "Steps of Growth" to emphasize on the gradual change of environment between 2 places.

It was really very enjoyable and unforgettable while carrying out this project. Everything started from the excursion from Taiping to Kuala Sepetang, then the Black and White photographs, followed by the conceptual site model then ended with an experimental installation. Everything was based on the observation and the interpretation that we have done in the excursion.
