Through the research, we are able to understand the architect, building, design elements, circulation, zoning and material of the House I in a deeper level.

Presentation

Above is the A1 presentation board that we have done.

Basically, House I by Peter Eisenman is also known as Barenholtz Pavilion which was actually completed on year 1968, located in Princeton, New Jersey in United States. It is attached to the Barenholtz House and used to be a toy museum. It is actually a residential design which in the same time was an experiment of the architect himself.

The main design approach of House I is "Deconstructivism" - deform a rationally structure space to form a new relationship. The concept of House I is "Cardboard Architecture" which showed the model-like qualities and thin white walls. Its ordering principles includes Datum, Hierarchy and Rhythm. Grid organization can be seen in the plan of House I. The approach of House 1 is oblique whereas its entrance is off-centered and projected. The configuration of the spaces in House Iis linear.

There are a few spaces in House I, for instance, foyer, living room, toilet, gallery, working space, balcony, etc. Spatial relationships like space within a space and adjacent space are shown in House I. The main material that were used are concrete, steel, bricks and clear glass.

Above shown are the proposal of abstract drawing that consisted of the 3 main core ideas that we have chosen from the House 1 which are Light, Void and Connection.

After the tutorial session, to finalize our ideas, we have changed one of the core ideas, Connection to Rhythm. So, our final 3 core ideas are Light, Void and Rhythm.

Light

House 1 has a lot of openings and allows natural lights to penetrate in.

Void

It has double volume in it which is very different from other houses that chosen by the other groups.

Rhythm

It has many openings that are square and rectangle. In the same time, the different intensity of the light rays that penetrate in shows rhythm.

Medium that we used for the canvas: acrylic, poster colour and brushes.

Final touch-up.

Presentation

The abstract drawing, entitled Luminous.

Presented by my groupmate, Marcus.

Upgraded canvas.

(real lights are added in to create the effect of light)

Above are the proposals that we have proposed during tutorial session. As mentioned above, Light, Void and Connection are the 3 main core ideas that we have chosen. From here, by applying real light, we have came out with an idea of creating a cubic box which its inside consists of a box with plenty of hole at all sides. This box is placed inside an opaque cube box which its surfaces are surrounded by tracing paper. By doing so, it can create a rhythm of square lights on the box outside when light penetrate out from the box inside.

Description of the entire project 01

The entire project 01

(under different light intensity environment)

It has been very fun and enjoyable to be able to work in a team throughout the entire project 01. We might have different opinions and ideas during discussion sometimes but we have worked well together in completing our very first group project. It is indeed a very great experience.
